CWJ Food Bank Challenge - Day 9
It's amazing how many people are following this challenge right now. Last night I went on a late night grocery run - the manager came over to ask how the challenge was going and to take a look at what I had placed on the conveyer belt this week (a head of lettuce, 1 tomato, 2 pears, and a gallon of milk - for a total of $10.65). It has been really interesting so far to hear the feedback from those who are following along.
Breakfast (10 am)
Blueberry Coconut Oatmeal w/ Tea, Sugar, and Milk
Total Cost: $0.79
I liked the blueberry and coconut oatmeal from Day 4 so much, I decided to have it again today! I love when you improvise based on what you already have at home and end up coming up with new favourites! This is another recipe that is going to make it's way into my usual breakfast routine, even after the challenge.
Lunch (1 pm)
2 Teas w/ Sugar, and Milk
Total Cost: $0.21
I was on the go today and didn't have much of a lunch sadly. I was still pretty full from lunch, since I had a huge bowl of oatmeal, though I was ravenous by the time I got home for dinner, and as a result had a big helping of dinner tonight.
Dinner (6:30 pm)
Spaghetti and Meat Sauce
Total Cost: $6.77
I was actually a little surprised at how expensive this was compared to a lot of other meals we have been making. So far, this has been our most expensive meal yet, which I find quite surprising actually. Whenever I think of the least expensive meal I can make, I always think of spaghetti. Turns out, that's not the case - not by a long shot! If I hadn't skipped lunch today, I wouldn't have been able to afford to eat this spaghetti. I don't know about you, but that's pretty alarming to me.
To make this, I fried up 1/2 lb of hamburger, grated 1 1/2 carrots, 1 onion, and simmered it in 3 cups of homemade tomato sauce, then served it over store bought dried pasta.
Total time spent preparing food today: 20 minutes
Total Daily Meal Cost: $3.89/person ($7.77 total)
Under Budget: $0.11/person ($0.23 total)
