Alberta Open Farm Days: Farmer's Market Tour

One of my favourite aspects of summer is the abundance of locally grown fruits and vegetables.  It's not uncommon for me to take the 3 hour road trip simply to visit some of my favourite markets.

When Community Futures West Yellowhead and Yellowhead County asked me to participate in Alberta Open Farm days this year, I was really excited.  When I heard that part of my job would be to visit local farms and farmer's markets, it was like a dream come true.

Last week, I visited all of the markets within Yellowhead County and posted a live video tour of each market, which you can find on my Facebook page, or by clicking on each town below:
Jasper  -   Hinton  -   Edson -   Evansburg

On August 19th I will be preparing a meal using locally sourced ingredients from local producers in our region. You can find more information out about this event here

I was blown away by all of the different, interesting things that each market had to offer.

Not only were there local farmers selling the fruit and veggies that they had grown themselves, there were quite a few vendors that were purchasing fresh produce from other vendors to make their own pies, jelly's, jams, etc. for sale. It was great to see that when I purchased from one vendor, I was actually supporting two.

There were even vendors creating their own salves and tonics with names inspired by the area.

As I toured through the markets, I was impressed by not only the abundance of food products, but also the creativity of a lot of the vendors.

I always appreciate handmade items the most.  You can literally feel and see the love that went into creating each product.

... and the imagination that went into each creation.

These belts tell a great Alberta story, don't you think?

Over 90 farms across Alberta will be participating, and will open their farms to the public for a weekend of learning, experiencing, and tasting.  I've partnered with Yellowhead County and Community Futures West Yellowhead to share the stores of the 4 local farmers in our region.
