CWJ Food Bank Challenge: Groceries

As promised, here is a grocery list along with prices and receipts from everything I purchased today.  If you're just joining the conversation, you can catch up HERE.

The town I live in has 2 main grocery stores - Freson Brothers, and Safeway.  We also have Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart a Health Food Store, and a drug store - King Value Drug Mart - that sells an array of allergen friendly foods.  For the purpose of this exercise, I chose to purchase the bulk of my items at Freson Brothers today because they offer 15% off on the first day of each month.  Safeway offers 10% of on Tuesdays so I'll be hitting them up to stock up on fresh food throughout the month.

A few items, such as salt, olive oil, etc. will last me well beyond the 30 days, but for the sake of this exercise I purchased everything all over again.  I won't even be using spices, etc. that I currently have in my cupboard to ensure this exercise is as authentic as possible.

  1. Wow, that is quite the challenge! when I think about it I probably spend close to 240 per "week" to feed my family(2 adult and 2 small children) did you make up a menu for the month before you purchased your items? are you going to share what you cook/bake every day? do you anticipate any flex money to purchase stuff fresh such as fruit, veggies? what about Milk, you must drink more than 4lts per month. I can't wait to see how you make out! Best of luck :)

    1. I agree - this is going to be quite the challenge! I plan about writing about everything - the good the bad and the ugly! I made up a rough menu before embarking on this journey, but I tend to cook spur of the moment so I'll be varying from it slightly as I go. I'll be sharing photos, total cost, and calories for every single meal. I still have $35.17 left over, which I plan on using to purchase the remaining fresh ingredients that I'll need throughout the month, for items like milk, eggs etc. This is admittedly less than I had hoped for, however Freson Brother's offers 15% off your entire purchase on the 1st of each month so I really took advantage of that yesterday.
